01

Step 1 — make sure you are on the current patch

Versions 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 both fixed startup and file-access crashes. If Steam has not updated the game, nothing else on this list is worth trying yet. Version 1.0.2 also specifically addressed crashes tied to file access errors and to mount interactions.

02

Step 2 — the official environment checks

These come from the developer’s own troubleshooting page and cost nothing but time.

  • Confirm your system meets the minimum requirements listed at the bottom of the Steam page.
  • Update your graphics drivers and your operating system.
  • Open Windows “Graphics Settings”, select Fields of Mistria, and set it to High performance so it uses the correct GPU.
03

Step 3 — verify the installed files

Use Steam’s file verification before you start moving or deleting anything yourself. It is reversible, it does not touch your saves, and it resolves a meaningful share of launch failures caused by an interrupted update.

04

Step 4 — remove mods from the equation

If you installed mods before 1.0, they are the most likely cause. Mods built against an older build can prevent the game from starting at all after an engine or code change, and the new engine beta branch does not support mods.

05

Step 5 — report it rather than guessing

If the game still will not start, the developer takes bug reports through a form, with localised versions in Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish. A report with your OS, GPU and driver version is worth more than another hour of trial and error.

06

On community workarounds

A widely shared launch fix circulated on release day and helped some players while doing nothing for others. We do not reproduce file-editing workarounds here, because we cannot verify them against every configuration and the downside — a corrupted install or save — is worse than waiting for a patch.
